I always shoot digital in color. If I want to an image in black & white, rather than shooting in B&W or simply converting directly, I desaturate.For the photo of the pines & fence: 1.) Increase the exposure a bit; it's a little dark.2.) Increase the high-lights of green or the shadows of red; the resulting contrast will be amazing.3.) Desaturation until the image is effectively black & white. The results will be stunning.
