Is Women's Boxing Down for the Count? is a pulse-check piece on the sport by Christina Scotti at Fox/Business (I hate pointing to anything on Fox, but hey, ideas are ideas). The sadly common premise is that female boxing is faltering, but then so is male. She goes over the several sound reasons you'd expect, lingering lastly over the ole tainted image idea.
I like that she touches on the fact that a boxer must sacrifice her body. It seems like such an obvious point, but honestly, it gets overlooked in most renditions of this conversation.

Another factor keeping the sport from becoming a profitable profession is the fact that there aren’t many incentives for women boxers, according to David Carter, assistant professor of sports marketing at USC Marshall School of Business. And it seems that the denial of entry into the 2008 Beijing Olympics by the International Olympic Committee is yet another blockade that ruins any opportunity for potential business in the sport...Women fights are not featured on cash-cow programming slots on Pay Per View or even on HBO’s popular series Boxing After Dark...there aren't enough professional female fighters out there yet.
But hey, the sport is still kicking a-plenty. Just check out Sue Fox's definitive site WBAN: Women Boxing Archive Network for proof.

I've never been a big fan of Boxing. I've been even less of a fan of womens boxing. I guess it's the thougth of getting hit in the head that turns me off. For many years I worked in a head injury hospital, it's not a fun injury to live with. Even less fun for the people who have to take care of you!
As for womens sports and incentives for women playing the sport....I think there's a lack of funding and intrest acrossed the board..how sad is that!
